In the 25th April 1974 a revolution overtook the authoritarian regime that ruled Portugal at the time and the process to democratization was started. To mark this date the national "Liberty Day" is celebrated all years with several events, the most significant is a parade in the streets of the capital, Lisbon that had about 40'000 people in 2004.
On the last few years this parade included a small but visible LGBT-rights group defending several issues. This year the main focus were: the homophobic agressions in the city of Viseu (without an adequate response from the local authorities) and the Women's World March.
