"Derek Jarman - Life as Art" celebrates and explores the rich and colourful world of St Derek of Dungeness - canonised by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in the early 90s. The documentary is driven by entertaining, insightful and thought-provoking interviews with some of Jarman's closest family, friends and colleagues including Tilda Swinton and Christopher Hobbs. Off-screen questions from the director inject a sense of dialogue into the interviews which are largely shot in close-up on mini DV and against backgrounds of plants, shrubs, trees, or a single block of colour. Super8 shots of the contributors act as cut-aways bringing the influence of Jarman's 'stylistic look' to the documentary. Clips and stills from his films, and unseen footage of Derek directing "Wittgenstein" give a clear feel for the anarchy, colour, imagery and poetry of the man and his work.
