Após uma ausência de cinco anos, Kath regressa ao Hotel Splendide, onde outrora estagiou como sub-chefe. Nessa altura, o hotel e em especial a cozinha, encontravam-se sob a mão de ferro da Mrs. Blanche, uma fanática defensora de uma vida saudável, inflexível quando se tratava de pôr em prática as suas ideias. Ronald Blanche, o seu filho e cozinheiro-chefe, fora encorajado a cozinhar excessivamente cada refeição até esta se tornar irreconhecível; por seu lado, Cora, a irmã, era responsável pela administração dos diversos tratamentos - banhos de lama, clísteres, esse tipo de coisa. Um ano após a morte de Mrs. Blanche, Kath tem esperança que nada se intrometa entre ela e Ronald, que por sua vez está decidido a livrar-se de Kath assim que puder. Entretanto, Kath tem instruções rigorosas de não se intrometer em nada enquanto estiver no hotel. Contudo, Kath depressa começa a esgueirar-se para a cozinha, para preparar as suas próprias refeições. Em pouco tempo a cozinha torna-se num verdadeiro campo de batalha.

After an absence of five years, Kath returns to the Hotel Splendide, where she once trained as a sous-chef. At that time, the hotel and especially the kitchen were under the iron rule of Mrs. Blanche, a fanatical proponent of healthy living, who was adamant when it came to putting her ideas into practice. Ronald Blanche, her son and head chef, was encouraged to overcook every meal until it was unrecognisable; his sister, Cora, on the other hand, was responsible for administering the various treatments - mud baths, enemas, that kind of thing. Now that Mrs. Blanche has been dead for a year, Kath is hoping that nothing will come between her and Ronald who, however, is determined to get rid of Kath as soon as he can. Meanwhile, Kath is given strict instructions not to stick her oar into anything while she's still at the hotel. It is not long, however, before Kath starts creeping into the kitchen to prepare her own meals. Before long, the kitchen has turned into a veritable battlefield...
