OIM Procura vítimas do regime Nazi [Resumo]

IOM SEARCHES FOR DISABLED VICTIMS OF THE NAZI REGIME Handicapped and persons who suffered extremely severe health damage in connection with Nazi wrongs can file a claim with IOM until the end of December 2001!

Bonn, 29 November 2001 – In recognition of the persecution of physically and mentally handicapped persons by the Nazi regime and of the personal injury suffered by many victims in connection with Nazi wrongs, the Swiss Bank and German compensation programmes administered by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) seek to provide compensation to a long-neglected group of victims. Due to the long silence that followed the brutal mistreatment of handicapped and other persons during the Nazi regime, it is now very difficult to find individuals who might be eligible for compensation under the IOM programmes. Norbert Wühler, Director, Claims Processing IOM compensation programmes therefore appeals to the media, disabled associations and general public to help find the victims and make them aware of the possibility to file a claim with IOM. “Only with the broad support of all relevant groups, will we be able to find the people, who were persecuted by the Nazis merely because they had a mental or a physical handicap or because they were different,“ Wühler stressed at a press conference. "The victims should be given the chance to finally receive some recognition for their suffering and to claim for compensation."

Under its Holocaust Victim Assets Programme (HVAP)/Swiss Banks, IOM makes payments to disabled persons who had to perform slave labour for German or Swiss companies, for the Nazi regime, or who sought entry into Switzerland to avoid persecution but were denied entry or allowed to enter and abused as refugees. Victims may receive up to USD 2,500.

Under its German Forced Labour Compensation Programme (GFLCP), IOM compensates victims of three categories of personal injury: persons who suffered medical experiments; parents of children who died in a home for children of slave or forced labourers, or persons who themselves were lodged in a children’s home and suffered severe health damage (Category 1). Persons who suffered lasting and extremely severe or severe health damage in connection with Nazi wrongs (Categories 2 and 3) can also file a claim with IOM but will only receive compensation if the payment of claimants in the first category has not depleted the available funds! Victims may receive up to DEM 15,000.

All claims must be filed with IOM by 31 December 2001.

Heirs of disabled and personal injury victims who died on or after February 16, 1999 are also entitled to claim for compensation. If a victim who filed a claim dies, the heirs must assert their claim with IOM within six months after the date of death.

IOM in Geneva provides claim forms and assistance free of charge. A HVAP poster for the disabled compensation scheme and a GFLCP brochure on the personal injury compensation scheme are available for dissemination and information.
