Judas Priest e Rob Halford

A banda Judas Priest foi formada em Birmingham, Reino Unido, em 1969 pelo guitarrista K.K.Dowining (nascido Kenneth Downing) e o seu amigo Ian Hill (baixista). A sua primeira actuação "a sério" foi em Essington em 1971 com a ajuda de Alan Atkins (voz) e John Ellis (bateria). O nome da banda veio da banda anterior de Atkins que tinha retirado o nome da música de Bod Dylan "The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest". No final de 1971 Alan Moore foi substituido na bateria por Chris Campbell e em 1973 sairam Atkins e Campbell ficando apenas Hull and Downing. O vocalista Rob Halford (nascido a 25 Agosto 1951) e o baterista John Hinch ambos da banda Hiroshima, juntaram-se nessa altura ao grupo e a sorte parece ter mudado. Começaram a ter mais actuações no Reino Unido, de tal forma que passaram a ter mais um guitarrista: Glenn Tipton (nascido a 25 Outubro 1948). Em 1974 fizeram uma primeira tourné no estrageiro mais precisamente na Alemanha e Holanda. Voltaram a casa com um contracto com a pequena editora Gull. No entanto não ficaram muito contentes com o primeiro album "Rocka Rolla" de Setembro 1974 e Hinch foi substituído pelo original Alan Moore. Entretanto começaram a escalada para o sucesso com alguns (graves) precalços pelo caminho, incluindo uma acusação de incitação ao suicídio em 1990 (foram declarados inocentes em 1993). Em 1979 passaram pelo Japão, altura em que Blinks foi substituído por Dave Holland. Pouco depois tiveram vários singles nos Tops do Reino Unido e dos E.U.A. Por altura do album Painkiller Dave Holland sai sendo substituído por Scott Travis. Entretanto Halford deixa o projecto (1992) para várias actuações a solo e com outras bandas. Em 1997 é lançado o album Jugulator com o novo vocalista Ripper Owens.

Rob Halford assumiu-se como gay em Fevereiro de 98 numa entrevista à MTV, causando algum impacto nos fans, embora da forma como a MTV comentou o facto parecia que toda a genta já sabia do que se passava, de tal forma que numa entrevista feita passadas duas semanas o guitarrista K.K. Downing afirmou que "devia ser o segredo mais mal guardado do rock and roll" (!).
